Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û

 By fostering empathy and understanding, the interdisciplinary Poverty Simulation Event emphasized the importance of viewing poverty not just as an economic issue but as a holistic one affecting every aspect of a person’s life.  

A Transformative Experience  

On October 18th, students and faculty gathered in the JFK Student Center for a transformative experience at the Poverty Simulation Event, which brought together participants from nursing, physical therapy, social work, and public health. This interdisciplinary event offered a unique opportunity to explore the realities faced by individuals living in poverty, fostering a deeper connection between different fields of study in addressing this critical social issue. 

Immersing in the Reality of Poverty

Students were immersed in scenarios that mirrored the daily struggles of people in poverty. They had to navigate challenges like securing housing, accessing healthcare, providing for their families, and managing limited resources. The simulation went beyond theoretical understanding, giving participants an authentic experience of the frustration, stress, and uncertainty that often accompany life below the poverty line.

Promoting Awareness and Understanding

The event promoted greater awareness among students pursuing healthcare and social service careers, illustrating how poverty impacts physical, emotional, and mental well-being. By fostering empathy and understanding, the simulation emphasized the importance of viewing poverty not just as an economic issue but as a holistic one affecting every aspect of a person’s life.

The Power of Interdisciplinary Collaboration

The Poverty Simulation highlighted the necessity of teamwork in addressing poverty’s widespread effects. Participants from different academic disciplines learned how to communicate effectively with one another, demonstrating that interdisciplinary collaboration is key to creating long-term solutions. The exchange of ideas and faculty expertise enriched the event, proving that complex social issues require coordinated efforts across professions.

Inspiring Local Change 

In addition to fostering dialogue, the Poverty Simulation inspired Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û students to think critically about their roles in initiating local change. Many left the event with a desire to motivate action in their communities, aiming to alleviate poverty's effects through professional practice and civic engagement.
